Description
Sn5202 Edwardian mahogany and inlaid desk by Maple and Co, having black tooled leather writing surface, satinwood crossbanded top with moulded edge and mahogany slider to each side above nine mahogany lined and satinwood crossbanded, graduated drawers (centre drawer bear Maple label), all fitted with original bras handles, standing on moulded plinth base. This antique desk is fitted with original central locking mechanism, once the long frieze drawer is locked all other drawers are locked simultaneously. This desk retains its original finish which has been cleaned and revived, all in excellent home ready condition. c1900

Maple & Co was established by John Maple and continued by his son John Blundell. The company was most prolific in the late Victorian and Edwardian era, specialising in fine quality furniture, designed and produced in their own workshops. By the 1880s they were the largest furniture store in the world, exported their fine furniture to every continent. Maples manufactured their luxury furniture entirely in-house, at a huge modern complex in Tottenham Court Road. A timber importer and furniture exporter, they landed prestigious contracts furnishing fine houses, hotels, embassies etc. Among them Tsar Nicholas’s Winter Palace and the Hofburg Imperial Palace in Vienna. Never compromising on quality, Maples produced a huge catalogue of fine furniture, covering every avenue of interior design.
